I did it.
For the last two years, aka my entire graduate career, I have been focused on my thesis. Last Wednesday (6.24), the day I wasn’t sure would ever actually come, arrived and I successfully defended what I consider to be my first novel. Reflecting on my presentation and my past two years, I found my passion for my research topic to be strong, and that my decision to continue higher education was highly fulfilled.
If you had asked me 2.5 years ago what my plan after graduation was, I would have stared at you blankly. I had no idea what I wanted to do design-wise, where I wanted to go, what kind of firm I wanted to work for, etc. I didn’t quite have the strength in passion for what I do like I have now. It only took 24 classes, 2 internships, and a 200 page thesis to get me to this point – and that’s fine, because I finally know. I know where I want to be, what I want to use my skills for, and that I share my passion with others through design – and all kinds of design at that. I learned more skills in the last two years via education and design experience, and that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t stayed in school and jumped on this opportunity.
Keeping it short and sweet – I know I made the right decision. I know that I am fully prepared to dive into any kind of design environment. Design is expressive, it’s interesting, it’s creative, it’s different, it’s exciting, it’s fast paced, it’s influential – and now I’m ready for all of that.
